Andy Griffith (June 1, 1926 – July 3, 2012) was an actor, director, producer, writer, gospel singer, and an American icon. He will be most remembered for being America’s favorite sheriff on the Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968) and then the country lawyer in the legal dram, Matlock (1986-1995). Mr Griffith died this morning at his home in North Carolina at the age of 86.
From Ron Howard who posted this message on Twitter: “His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations & shaped my life I’m forever grateful RIP Andy.”

Happy 100th Birthday Lucille Ball
Posted on 06. Aug, 2011 by ClassicMovieFan.
Happy Birthday to Lucille Ball, arguably one of televisions most popular comedians ever and who starred on the most popular and universally beloved sitcoms of all time-I Love Lucy. Was she an even better movie star? What do you think?
We still love Lucy as we celebrate what would be her 100th Birthday today. TCM or Turner Classic Movies is also celebrating the star today with the ongoing Summer of the Stars that goes through the whole month of August showcasing each day one of many famous classic movie stars of all time.
She was remembered best as a dizzy redhead with show business aspirations. It took awhile for Ball to launch her showbiz career as she did some modeling, became a “Goldwyn Girl”, and had some small roles in movies and a few major roles in B movies.
After marrying Desi Arnaz, she switched to MGM and received much better roles. In 1948 she took a starring role in a radio comedy, “My Favorite Husband” in which she payed a scatter-brained wife of a banker. The movie and Ball must have caught the eye of CBS, who later came knocking at her door wanting to turn her and the movie into a sitcom-I Love Lucy.
The rest is history as she became a TV pioneer and icon. She eventually became the first woman to own her own film studio as the head of Desilu.
For more about Lucille Ball, you can visit TCM and also view her mini biography from IMDb.

Elizabeth Taylor, a Leading Lady
Posted on 24. Mar, 2011 by ClassicMovieFan.
Elizabeth Taylor, A Leading Lady
An actress, a philanthropist and a Hollywood legend known as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Elizabeth Taylor – who died of congestive heart failure at age 79 on March 23 – leaves behind a legacy every bit as colorful as any of her screen roles. “Elizabeth is bigger than life,” her friend, songwriter Carol Bayer Sager, once told PEOPLE of the star. “She’s the closest thing we have in America to royalty.”
Her career in the movie industry spanned more than 70 years and she had over 50 films to her credit.
She also garnered two Academy Awards for best actress, one for her performance as a call girl in “Butterfield 8″ (in 1960) and then as the quick and bitter-tongued Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (in 1966).
In 1963, she signed a then-record $1 million contract to appear in “Cleopatra” and earned $6 million more because of delays in filming.
Mike Nichols directed Taylor in “Virginia Woolf” and considered her “one of the greatest cinema actresses.”
Taylor is also known for her love of jewels and her love of men. She was married eight times and her husbands included actor Richard Burton (twice), singer Eddie Fisher, U.S. Senator John Warner and producer Mike Todd. Her last husband was Larry Fortensky, a construction worker who she met at the Betty Ford Center where she fought her alcohol and dependency issues. That marriage later ended in divorce too.
Outside her film career, she was an avid supporter of HIV/AIDS research. Taylor was one of the first celebrities to speak about the AIDS crisis publicly and raised millions for research and treatment after her friend and actor Rock Hudson died of AIDS in 1985.
She helped establish the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985 and founded her own foundation in 1991, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
Taylor also supported numerous other charities and was a successful business woman who sold perfumes and scents under her name. Her line of fragrances now includes Passion, White Diamonds and Rough Diamonds. A portion of the profits are earmarked for her charities. To date, the fragrances have garnered her charity and AMFAR more than $120 million dollars.
According to a family statement, she was surrounded at her death by her children: Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd, and Maria Burton.
“My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love,” Michael Wilding said. “Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world.”
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
